Can this be applied to an old version of Trex deck. Ours is another brand like Trex but old and needs a face lift. We would prep with pressure washing. We have’s LOVED our other Cabot projects that have absolutely transformed other wood parts of our house and outdoor areas. Thanks
Hi, we have a 9 yr old side deck that gets a ton of hot afternoon sun which has been stained couple of times (oil based)…heard the solid stains only comes water based. Is oil based semi-solid the best option? Deck has been pressure washed. Thanks!
Does the Australian timber oil stain need to be sealed after stain application?
People of been warning me that cabbage isn’t any good… Like Sherman Williams bought them and then messed it up. I don’t know, but I just did a cedar deck with they’re oil in natural. And it looks pretty amazing and it’s bullet proof against water
Destroyed my deck
I have Cabot solid oil-based and haven't used it in a few years, so it is a bit thick. Can I add mineral spirits to thin it out a bit so it can be applied easily?
Wish I could buy some Oil based Olympic Solid Color Stain…as I had better luck with it than Cabot Stain. Anyone agree?
Australian Oil Stain dark color-I used your stain on our new treated wood deck. Color looks fantastic. We have a gravel driveway so every time we walk on the deck it gets gravel dust footprints everywhere the day after we stained the deck. How can I get the foot prints off without hurting the stain color? We tried hosing it down with water but did not work.

Does this soak into the wood or create a film finish on top? I’m trying to avoid anything that chips off like paint
Hi there! To achieve the best results, it's essential to follow all the preparation and application steps diligently. You can find more information at www.cabotstain.com/en/products/exterior-stains/solid-color-acrylic-stain-sealer. Thanks for reaching out!

is Cabot semi transparent deck stain a water based or an oil based stain?
Hi there, great question! It is an oil-based stain. For all the details, please visit www.cabotstain.com/en/products/exterior-stains/semi-transparent-stain-sealer. Hope this helps!
@@Cabot this website says that the semi transparent stain is oil based. But it us being sold as a water based stain. Which is correct?
Hi there, we appreciate you reaching out and bringing this to our attention. To better assist you can you provide us with further information and the link where this information was found? Thank you.
@@Cabot The website you sent me says it is an oil based, but my local Lowe’s stay says that Cabot does have water based deck stains and that they sell them such as the semi-transparent deck stains from Cabot.
We do offer water-based stains too. Cabot Semi-Transparent Acrylic Stain would be considered water-based. For more information, please visit www.cabotstain.com/en/products/exterior-stains/semi-transparent-acylic-siding-stain. We hope this information is useful!
What about using it on siding up in northern maine on a cabin with rought cut board and batton with live edge gable ends?
Hi, we’d love to help and recommend a product! Please reach out to us here: www.cabotstain.com/en/contact-us.
Can I paint porch paint over it.?
Hello Margaret! You can paint over it but make sure to read the application instructions of your paint and follow the prep directions accordingly. Happy painting!
Good product, but pick the color of this product first if you want the railings, etc. painted the same color in a different surface finish. This product has no neutral base only tint base and so other porch paints can not be colored to match. Chose the color of this first and then use a dried 1" sample on white paper to have the paint store match it to the porch paint of your choice.
can this product be sprayed with an airless sprayer? Ive got 850 feet of 6' fence to stain. i really do not want to roll and brush it
Hi JT, great question! Although you would have more control using a brush or a paint pad, you can apply our wood stains with a sprayer. You can find more staining tips and tricks here: www.cabotstain.com/en/how-to/stain/how-to-stain#tabs-dc3b0bd657-item-2b98ebfdc4-tab
How should you safely store a acrylic deck stain paint can if I used half the can
Hello, Michael! To safely store your stain, the most important thing is to properly seal the can. Make sure that you wipe excess stain from the rim, and store it where temperatures are moderate. You can see all our storage tips here: tinyurl.com/mkfwf8s8
I have a solid wood door, bottom half is very sun damaged down to splintering wood but top half has stain and a clear coat. What prep do I need to do before using your solid color acrylic stain and sealer?
Great question! Please visit www.cabotstain.com/en/how-to/prepare for more details about how to prep the wood before you begin. We hope this helps!
Hi there, thank you for reaching out. The Australian Timber Oil is water repellant. You can find full details on this product here: www.cabotstain.com/en/products/exterior-stains/australian-timber-oil. Hope this helps!
Does it work well for waterproofing? I live in the Pacific Northwest where rain and mildew are hard on our outdoor wood.

I didn’t know if it would damage it but didn’t see anything on the label that did anything about it. Composite.
This video didn't tell me a thing. Just happy talk with little or no information.
Can it be used on a wood fence
Hi Sara, yes it can!
I’m tempted to seal my deck with marine varnish. I built a new screen door from scratch and used marine varnish for the finish. Rain bounces off the door like nothing else. I’ll bet the UV protection is superior too. Bet I won’t have to repeat the effort every year or two like traditional deck products require.
Should I wipe the stain with a rag after I brush it on?
Hi Murdock! What product will you be using?
@@Cabot Semi transparent stain and sealer it is not oil base.
@@murdocklee8014 No - there is no need to wipe stain with a rag after brushing unless you've overapplied by mistake. Hope this helps!
@@Cabot Thanks, I love the results.
@@murdocklee8014 We're so glad you love your finished project!
It's too labor-intensive to do all these preparations.
If you apply the oil based solid stain, the results are worth every minute of prep! I live in an extremely humid climate and my cedar fence, stained Dark Gray, looks new after 12 years, with only 5 rotten boards and only where they were covered by mulch.
The paint peels off.

Did you apply it to new pressure treated lumber instead of giving it a season to dry? Did you apply it in the blistering direct sunlight like you aren't supposed to? Did you apply it over an older finish without pressure washing to remove first? And even if applied correctly...Deck finishes are not a do once and it lasts forever type of deal, especially on the walking/horizontal surfaces. Mileage will vary based on your climate as well. 99.5% of the time when paint or a product like this fails quickly, it was applied incorrectly. If you are one of those people who find yourself constantly leaving negative product reviews, particularly on items that require your own assembly or your own skill to apply or operate, I'm betting it is you that is the problem. Some people should just hire out certain jobs (instead of leaving dumbass ignorant reviews/comments).

I have a small porch with 3 steps. We’re renting right now so I had my landlord pick out the stain and sealer for me to do. Wood was very weathered but it turned out good because I flipped each board over revealing the better half and I’m doing like 3-4 coats for a very nice look.

This video is no good. You MUST SAND the deck. What is homie staining over at the end of the video? You can't stain wood with previous paint on it bro lmao it's not going to adhere to the wood... Also after you pressure wash, the deck must be sanded with 60/80 grit and then cleaned. DONT BUY THE STRIPPER. It's a marketing gimmick and harmful to the environment.
Good stuff. It looks horrible when you first apply it but then it penetrates, dries and comes out looking great.
